Dear all,
As everyone has experienced, the TS3 has been unstable these past few days. Grand Pa, whom owns and runs the TS3, reached out to Zephy and by luck I happened to be there at the time. I wanted to share the info with everyone in the interests of transparency.
Grand Pa is in the business of running servers and has a dedicated staff monitoring and maintaining the servers 24/7. The TS3 is one of many applications he hosts on his server and his company has a vested interest in keeping the servers up 24/7.
Last night, as Bloody stated in map chat, they moved the TS3 to another server which caused the outages. We also had additional outages and lag as his staff configured the new server for other applications and finalized the firewall.
Grand Pa stated he is aware of and his staff are actively investigating the server outages and lag. He stated the TS3 hosting server itself has never crashed and what we are experiencing are actual network issues affecting the entire server farm.
He stated in the server business, they are DDOS’d all of the time. Sometimes by some pretty nasty packages. I guess if you can imagine the network like a weather system, and the DDOS attacks are storm systems which are just on the network and roll through from network to network trying to take them down.
If it’s a particularly nasty DDOS “storm” they must shut down the network and close all ports. This affects all servers on the network and these are the outages we’ve experienced where we cannot log into TS3 at all. From my understanding these are pretty gnarly attacks and the staff has to buckle down and weather them out.
Mild DDOS storms cause lag and intermittent outages as his staff addresses and investigates these mild attacks. I don’t know what constitutes a mild attack as opposed to a major one, but there is apparently a difference. These attacks may be more focused attacks where the actual server is targeted specifically however thankfully they lack the sophistication of taking down the entire network.
Finally, Grand Pa is investigating possible solutions in the near term to address these attacks, however obviously he cannot comment on what those solutions are at this time as it may alert the people doing the attacks as to what he’s up to. He wanted us to know he and his staff take these attacks very seriously and there is a flurry of activity behind the scenes which we do not see.
So. that’s the update I got. I know there was talk about moving to another TS3 or having a back-up TS3 or what not. I would advise the server not to take any action on these yet and give Grand Pa and his staff the time and benefit of the doubt to do what they need to do. There are active solutions in play and I think we need to exercise patience to let those solutions be developed and implemented, then re-evaluate from there.
But, hey, I’m just a dog and this is a really long post!! Kudo’s to you if you actually read all of this and post up with your own comments below!!
