I think that would be a groovy idea working together on this. I would like to have a polished system that people can rely on to get the most out of their time. Too many commander trainings have been off the cuff. I still learned a lot, but a lot of it was redundant from what I had before.
Here is an example of what needs to happen to give a PvE player with apprehensions about WvW a good first day. Too often they come into WvW blind with no one to answer questions and have a horrible experience, never to return.
The First Day:
1. Connect with PvE player
2. Initial informal assessment of experience with WvW
3. Enter WvW with them. Join a party with them. Get them on TS if possible.
4. Basic orientation. Give a brief overview and listen to the questions they have
5. Karma train tour. Find a good karma train to join in on.
6. Get their username and play time. Add them to your friends list
7. Assess & determine their training priorities
8. Schedule open-ended training for that time and post it on TS3. This isn’t an appointment with the player. Just tell them that there is training. They can show up if they want.
They don’t want obligations, like report back here on a specific time or day. They don’t want to be overloaded with cumbersome details. They just want to get a taste of the game. We want that first impression to be a positive one. The best way for that to happen is to answer the questions they have and to get their hand dirty. Karma trains are a good way to do that. They “can be” safe where they learn the mechanics of siege and the point system. It can also be a stampede of enemies killing us over and over. Try not to put them in losing situations. PvP minded players will want the fights, so look for strays or zerg tails to gank. They won’t be prepared for large scale zerg fights. Non-PvP minded players will like killing guards and flipping objectives. Don’t worry, whatever their background or play style, we will train them in everything they need.
Commanders. A big part of their decision to play WvW again will be on the commander. It would be best if you’re not tagged up while you’re showing this guy around. It will let you focus on the task at hand. If you know the commanders well and size up the situation, you might be able to avoid a bad first impression. A commander who is inexperienced in fighting with 10 people on him, while there are several 20 man zergs roaming might be one of those. A PPT commander adept and dodging zergs while flipping objectives quickly can be good however. Use your judgment.
